What is "Brand Identity"?

Brand Identity refers to the collection of brand elements a company or organization uses to portray a particular image to its audience. It encompasses a variety of components, each contributing to the overall perception of the brand.

Elements of Brand Identity:

  • Logos: The visual and recognizable symbol representing the brand.
  • Typography: The specific fonts and styles chosen to represent a brand.
  • Brand Colors: The specific colors used to convey the brand's personality and evoke emotions.
  • Products & Packaging: The products and other physical elements of brand.
  • Brand Voice: The consistent tone and style of communication used by a brand.
  • Personality: The human characteristics attributed to the brand.
  • Core Values: The fundamental beliefs and principles guiding the brand.

Known for its slogan "Save Money. Live Better," Walmart's brand identity revolves around affordability and convenience. The brand's blue and yellow color scheme, simple typography, and approachable brand voice all reinforce its commitment to providing value to customers.

Media streaming giant Spotify offers a fun user-experience for all with its far-reaching and innovative app. With over 615 million users, the app offers users the ability to find music, listen to audiobooks and podcasts, create playlists, and much more.  Offering users personalized playlists and custom end-of-year listening summaries, music discovery and individualization appears to be the #1 priority of this brand. 

  • Logo: Green circle with three curved lines resembling audio waves
  • Slogan: "Music for Everyone." 
  • Style: Clean, modern, creative, fun
  • Voice: Inclusive, trendsetting, innovative
  • Values: Good user-experience, accessible content, personalization
  • Stories: Spotify uses AI to curate music and playlists to both free and paid users, such as Spotify Wrapped and Daylists, to help tell users' stories by way of their own listening habits. These users then connect with other users via social media to share their personalized music stories.

Brand Voice on Social Media

"Brand voice" refers to the consistent personality and style a brand uses in its communication across all channels. It encompasses the words, phrases, and tone a brand employs to convey its values, personality, and messages. 

Examples of Brand Voice

Duolingo

Known for its playful and humorous brand voice, Duolingo engages users with witty comments and memes, making language learning fun and accessible. Duolingo creates silly and somewhat chaotic Internet-content such as light-heartedly threatening app users to do their Duolingo, "or else." Followers are delighted by the lack of seriousness behind this brand's voice.

  • Logo: Green owl mascot named Duo
  • Slogan: "Learn Languages Free." 
  • Style: Easy-to-read, bright, cheerful, light-hearted
  • Voice: Playful, humorous, chaotic, threatening (in jest), quirky
  • Values: Ease-of-use, gamification, free product, usability
  • Stories: Duo, the owl, has numerous stories for followers on social media, including him playfully threatening users of the app if they do not do their Duolingo, as well as being in love with musician Dua Lipa and trying to get her to like him in return.

The brand frequently shares content that evokes a sense of community and shared experiences, such as growing up playing games such as Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda.

  • Slogan: "There's No Play Like It." 
  • Style: Simple, fun, vibrant, imaginative, playful
  • Voice: Approachable, appealing to a broad audience, nostalgic
  • Values: Fun for the whole family, inclusivity, simplicity
  • Stories: Nintendo uses its tie to childhood to continue selling new games in its various franchises, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon. This allows Nintendo to remain relevant even as children grow into adults and show their own children to magic of Nintendo games.

"Brand story" is the narrative that encapsulates the essence, values, mission, and vision of a brand. It is more than just a marketing message; it is a compelling tale that conveys the journey, purpose, and identity of the brand to its audience.

Who Is Your Audience?

"Audience" refers to the group of people your brand is relevant for and who your brand is attempting to connect with.

Identifying and understanding your audience is arguably the most important aspect of building a successful brand identity. Tailoring your content, voice, and overall strategy to meet their preferences and expectations can significantly enhance engagement and loyalty.

Things to consider when assessing your audience include:

  • Demographics: What is the age, gender, occupation, level of education, etc. of your audience?
  • Psychographics: What values, attitudes, and lifestyle do your audience members have?
  • Geographics: Where is your audience located? Do they live in cities? Urban areas? Rural areas?
  • Needs: What does your audience need? What challenges, pain points, and problems do they face?
  • Communications channels: Where does your audience hear about the outside world? Social media? Newspapers? Radio? Traditional television? Word of mouth?

Known for her relatable personal narrative style of songwriting, Swift's audience connect with her through shared experiences and emotions. By understanding her audience's preferences, she uses social media to resonate deeply with her fans on a personal level, fostering a dedicated community that she has built over her lifetime.

  • Style: Swift's style varies with each album, or "era," all with distinct aesthetic and themes
  • Voice: Authentic, relatable, multifaceted, approachable, ever-evolving
  • Values: Versatility, audience-focused, empowerment, honesty
  • Stories: Swift creates well-crafted narratives for each album release that follows her personal journeys in love, fame, and other life experiences that fans enjoy following. She uses teasers and hides Easter eggs in her releases to help gamify the experience for her fans to interact with her content and raise excitement. Taylor interacts with her audience directly on social media and makes choices in her production with the help of her followers, allowing them to co-create the monolith that is Taylor Swift.
